Orion and I were reclined on the flowered replica of the king-sized chaise lounge. Per our negotiation, he was in a pair of pants. Blessedly shirtless, but at least I was no longer being tempted with his gifts from below. I, on the other hand, was in the little satin silver nightgown. Here was the thing, as I did years ago, I felt beautiful in it. Powerful. With the reminder of how much happiness Orion and I once shared, the nightgown helped lift my mood and brought an air of peace into my soul. Maybe Orion knew that would happen. Maybe not. Either way, I was, for the moment, happy.

Fairy had done away with the glamour of the ocean and instead, we were enjoying the natural breathtaking view. Beyond us was a sea of green trees, flowers, and a bit farther away, the ocean. We were eating scrambled eggs and the Fairy equivalent of a cinnamon roll. This roll was unbelievably light, so sweet my toes curled, and in the center were baked apples. They were delicious, and Orion had a look of pride that I was shamelessly stuffing myself silly.

“You like them?” he asked, already knowing the answer.

“Love.” I licked my sticky fingers then drank from the glass full of juice made from the sweetest of oranges. It all tasted like heaven, especially since I hadn’t eaten in days.

This moment was reminiscent of the lazy Sunday mornings Orion and I would spend together at his condo. His hair was tousled, and he looked as delicious as this cinnamon roll. We were enjoying the quiet comfortableness we used to share all those years ago. In truth, I was trying to pretend that everything was fine. That we weren’t trying to save Fae and humanity. In this imaginary world, I loved Orion, Orion loved me, and there were no problems. Just us, enjoying each other, with no worries on the horizon.

“I never put two and two together that it was Relle I pulled from the ocean all those years ago,” I said. “Not until I saw it in the dream.”

“I hadn’t meant to use her name, but I was so damn scared and angry it happened. Relle was still a child, but she had strong visions. She went high up on the demon hit list quickly. Because of that, we could no longer allow her to roam freely on earth, but Relle has always had a mind of her own.” A range of emotions played over his face. “She doesn’t remember the specifics of the drowning, only that it happened, and she doesn’t know you saved her that night, but I do. I will never be able to thank you enough for that.”

Uncomfortable with his blind praise, I changed the subject. “Where are the wings?”

“Still here.” Orion leaned forward, and from the scarred area on his shoulder blades, wings emerged. Bright, golden, and awe inspiring. As quickly as they were there, he pulled them back in and then leaned back against the chaise lounge.
